The case of federal deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) did not mobilize the Italian right nor provoke reactions from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, according to an analysis by Pedro Venceslau, on CNN Brasil, this Thursday (27).
Zambelli has been detained in Rome since June. The hearing that will decide on his extradition to Brazil. It is scheduled for December 4th.
The congresswoman was sentenced by the Supreme Federal Court to ten years in prison for her involvement in the hacking of the National Council of Justice (CNJ) system. After the conviction, she fled to Italy claiming to be an Italian citizen.
“As an Italian citizen, I am untouchable,” the congresswoman said in a previous interview with CNN Brazil. Her defense team had hoped for at least a gesture from the Italian Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, which has not yet occurred.
The extradition treaty between Brazil and Italy, in effect since 1993, allows the European country to refuse to extradite citizens with dual nationality. The Italian courts will assess whether Zambelli can be considered a political target or if she was judged by an exceptional court, which does not apply to the Brazilian Supreme Court (STF).

The Italian press has given little attention to the case, and there have been no statements from parliamentarians close to Meloni's government. says Venceslau.
Even with judicial approval, the final decision may depend on a political stance from the Italian government, which could generate diplomatic tension.
