Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni publicly celebrated the recognition of Italian cuisine as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCOIn a recorded message, she highlighted national pride and acknowledged the contribution of Italians living abroad.
“Today UNESCO recognized Italian cuisine as a World Heritage Site. We are the first in the world to receive this title, which honors who we are and our identity,” declared Meloni.
According to the head of government, Italian cuisine represents much more than a set of recipes. "It's culture, tradition, work, wealth. It originates from agricultural chains that combine quality and sustainability. It preserves a millennial heritage that is passed down from generation to generation," she stated.
Meloni also highlighted the role of producers, chefs, and restaurateurs in enhancing Italian cuisine. "It grows through the excellence of our producers, is transformed into a masterpiece in the hands of our cooks, and is presented with dedication by the teams in our restaurants."
Italy at the top of European agriculture.
The Prime Minister stated that the country already exports 70 billion euros worth of agri-food products and is a leader in Europe in added value in agriculture. She believes that UNESCO recognition will give even more impetus to the so-called "Italian System," allowing it to achieve new economic and cultural goals.
Meloni thanked Ministers Francesco Lollobrigida (Agriculture) and Gennaro Sangiuliano (Culture) for leading the application process, which began in 2023.
Italians abroad are part of the victory.
In his speech, Meloni also addressed Italian citizens living abroad. “We did not win this battle alone. We won together with the Italian people, together with our compatriots abroad, together with everyone in the world who loves our culture, our identity, our way of life.”
She concluded her message with a national exaltation: “Today we celebrate a victory for Italy. The victory of an extraordinary nation that, when it believes in itself and knows what it is capable of, has no rivals. Long live Italian cuisine, long live Italy.”
