The most consumed wines in Italy in 2024 were revealed by a survey by the Research Institute circana. The study divided the labels into emerging and absolute sales leaders, based on data from large distribution.
In total, Italians consumed 753 million liters of wine and sparkling wine in the year, a figure 1,3% lower than in 2023. Despite the slight drop in volume, there was a 2,2% increase in value, which indicates a growing preference for higher quality products.
Emerging wines in the spotlight
Inzolia, originally from Sicily, leads the list of emerging wines with 12,9% growth in sales.
In second place is Primitivo di Puglia, with an increase of 11,8%. Vermentino occupies third place, with an increase of 11,7%.
Ribolla, typical of Friuli Venezia Giulia, came in fourth place, with an increase of 11,3%.

Best-selling wines
Among the best-selling wines in Italy, Prosecco maintains its leadership with almost 50 million liters sold in 2024, a growth of 4,7%.
In second place is Chianti, even with a 29% drop in sales compared to 2023, totaling 16 million liters in the year.
Lambrusco completes the podium, with more than 15 million liters sold, despite an annual decline of 4%.

Average price and consumption
According to data from Circana, the average price per liter of wines with designation of origin (Doc, Docg and Igt) was 5,57 euros, an increase of 2% compared to the previous year. In 2023, growth had been 6%.
Production and market stability
After years marked by high production costs and economic instability, the market showed signs of recovery in 2023. There was a reduction in inflationary pressure and an improvement in price dynamics.
The expectation is for consolidation in 2025, although international trade tensions, such as possible new taxes in the United States, still worry the sector.
