The Vincentians in the World Association, in partnership with the Bertoliana Civic Library, will present the book on October 8th, at 18 pm One hundred and fifty years of Italian immigration in Rio Grande do Sul 1875-2025, at an event at Palazzo Cordellina, in Vicenza, Italy.
The work brings together contributions from 68 scholars and is the result of collaboration between 17 Brazilian and Italian universities. The launch marks the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the first Italian immigrants to the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
Published in Portuguese and Italian, the volume addresses historical and cultural aspects of the Italian presence in the southern Brazilian state. Topics include entrepreneurship, religion, art, traditions, media, and family structure.
Four million descendants in the state
Rio Grande do Sul is home to approximately 4 million people of Italian descent. They represent approximately 40% of the state's population, according to data released in the book's presentation.
Participating in the event will be Gelson Leonardo Rech, rector of the University of Caxias do Sul; Alberto Galla, president of the Bertoliana Civic Library; Ferruccio Zecchin, president of the Vincentians Worldwide Association; and Anthony Beaux Tessari, director of the UCS Historical and Cultural Memory Institute.
The initiative also has the official sponsorship of consulate General of Italy in Porto Alegre.
