After being closed again due to the collapse of some rocks, the famous “Via dell'Amore” of Cinque Terre, in the Italian region of Liguria, is expected to reopen to the public by Christmas, local authorities said last Friday (1st).
The estimated reopening of the almost one kilometer long path, which runs along precipices between the cities of Riomaggiore and Manarola, was carried out by the Italian municipalities themselves after a thorough check.
Heavy rains that hit the area in recent days caused rocks to fall, breaking the protective net and partially damaging a recently built tunnel that covered part of the path.
These episodes forced a new temporary closure of the “Via dell'Amore” to ensure the safety of visitors.
"The aim is to be able to reopen the route by Christmas, so as to guarantee visits during one of the most evocative periods of the year, with the Cinque Terre illuminated. During the technical checks, it became necessary to continue with the blasting of rocks before carrying out the reinforcement of the wall and the restoration of the damaged network.
The intervention will be even more robust than that carried out to reopen the road”, analyzed the mayor of Riomaggiore, Fabrizia Pecunia.
The “Way of Love” underwent renovation, the result of an agreement between the government of Liguria and the Italian Ministries of Cultural Heritage and the Environment, after a rockslide injured four tourists on September 24, 2012.
Considered one of the main attractions on the country's coast, the place gained romantic fame because at the time it was built, in the mid-1920s, it served as a hiding place for young lovers. (HANDLE)
