The feature film “Vermiglio”, by filmmaker Maura Delpero, was chosen this Tuesday (24) by the National Association of Film and Audiovisual Industries (Anica) to represent Italy in the competition for Oscar for best international film in 2025.
The work beat 17 other competitors, including the favorite “Parthenope”, by Paolo Sorrentino, winner of the statuette in the category for “The Great Beauty” in 2014.
According to Anica, Delpero's work was chosen “for its ability to tell the story of rural Italy in the past, whose feelings and themes are still universal and relevant today”.
“Vermiglio” recently won the Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and is set in the Dolomites, on the border with Austria, during World War II.
In 1944, the arrival of a wounded soldier in remote Vermiglio shakes up the quiet life of a teacher and his family, after his eldest daughter falls in love and decides to marry the stranger.
The list of 15 pre-nominees for the Oscar for best international film will be announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on December 17, 2024, while the announcement of the finalists is scheduled for January 17, 2025. The awards ceremony will be on March 2 of next year.
“Vermiglio” will be competing against “I’m Still Here”, a film by Walter Salles that won the award for best screenplay in Venice and was nominated to represent Brazil in the Oscar race. (HANDLE)
