Two strong earthquakes shake Italy. The earthquakes had their epicenter in the Marches region, in the center of the country.
The earth shakes again in central Italy. At 19:11 pm (15:11 pm Brasília time), an earthquake with a magnitude of 5,4 on the Richter scale and with an epicenter in the province of Macerata, in the Marches region, at a depth of 10 kilometers, was noticed in distant regions such as Roma, L'Aquila, Perugia and Terni.
It was also felt in even more distant cities, such as Florence and Naples. Two hours later, a new tremor of magnitude 6,2 was felt in the center of Roma. There is no information about victims.
The tremor occurs just two months after a huge earthquake that hit the village of Amatrice with greater impact and left almost 300 people dead. The region's power system went down due to Wednesday's tremor.
Fear
Many people are afraid to leave their homes, according to local press. Firefighters received dozens of calls.
According to experts interviewed by the local press, the earthquake is somehow linked to that of Amatrice. The biggest problems, according to authorities Civil defense, are taking place along Via Salaria to Arquata del Tronto, one of the hardest hit towns in August.
Its mayor, Aleandro Petrucci, confirmed that at the time of the earthquake there were “about 50 people” inside the historic center, those who had decided to stay in their homes because they had not suffered considerable damage during the earthquake on August 24th.
According to the mayor, these people decided to move to safer spots as a precaution. “The fear is great, tonight we will not sleep,” he said.
Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who was traveling outside Rome, returned to the Chigi palace to lead possible rescue work.
Civil Defense reported at around 21 pm (17 pm Brasília time) that it has no information about deaths and injuries.
