US President Donald Trump on Friday ordered top US administration officials to help Italy combat the novel coronavirus by providing medical supplies, humanitarian aid and other assistance.
In a memo to several Cabinet ministers, Trump ordered a variety of measures to help Italy, including making military personnel available from the EUA in the country – around 30 thousand – for telemedicine services, help in creating field hospitals and transporting supplies.
“The Italian Republic, one of our closest and oldest allies, is being devastated by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has already claimed more than 18 lives, left much of the Italian healthcare system on the brink of collapse and threatens to push the economy Italy for a deep recession”, says the memo.
Then, Trump claims that the Italian government asked for US help. “While the U.S. government’s first responsibility is to the American people, coming to Italy’s rescue will help in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and mitigate the impact of the crisis, while also demonstrating U.S. leadership in in the face of disinformation campaigns from Russia and China, reducing the risk of reinfections from Europe to the United States and maintaining crucial supply chains”, he adds.
Italy has recorded almost 19 deaths from Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus, more than any other country.
