Italy's Minister of Cultural Assets, Alberto Bonisoli, said on Monday (3) that the fire at the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro is a “tragedy for world culture”.

On his Twitter profile, the exponent of the 5 Star Movement (M5S) said that “200 years of work and a collection of 20 million items were lost”. “The damage is inestimable. I express all our solidarity with the Brazilian people,” he declared.
The Italian ambassador in Brasília, Antonio Bernardini, also used Twitter to speak out. “Inestimable damage to Brazilian and world culture,” he wrote.

The exact extent of the damage to the National Museum's collection is not yet known, but it is believed that most of it has been destroyed.
