Region is the epicenter of the pandemic in the European country
The government of Lombardy, the epicenter of the new coronavirus pandemic in Italy, has decreed a curfew in the region starting this Thursday (22), valid from 23 pm to 5 am the following day.
According to the order signed by Governor Attilio Fontana, from the far right, and the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, from the center left, the restrictive measure will be valid at least until November 13, 2020.
During the curfew, only travel will be permitted due to “proven work requirements or urgent situations”. As in the lockdown period, between March and May, citizens will have to fill out declarations explaining the reason for their travel during prohibited hours.
Anyone who violates the curfew will be subject to fines of 400 to 2,7 euros (from R$6,6 to R$XNUMX, at the current rate).
Epicenter
Most populous region in Italy, with 10 million inhabitants, the Lombardia is the leader in cases (130.479) and deaths (17.103) caused by the new coronavirus in the country in absolute terms – in total, the Italian territory records 434.449 infections and 36.705 deaths.
Considering relative indices, which take into account the size of the population, Lombardy is the second with the most cases among the 20 regions of Italy (1.297 for every 100 thousand inhabitants), behind only the tiny Aosta Valley (1.608/100 thousand inhabitants). ), but it is the first in deaths (170/100 thousand inhabitants).
The region recorded 2.023 cases last Tuesday alone (20), one of the highest numbers since the start of the pandemic. With the hypothesis of a new lockdown ruled out by the Italian government, regions have been betting on curfews to contain the “second wave” of the pandemic.
In addition to Lombardy, Campania, the third most populous region in the country, requested approval from the Ministry of Health to decree a blockade of activities and travel from October 23rd, from 23pm to 5am the following day.
If that happens, Italy will have a quarter of its population under a nighttime curfew.
