The city of Milan, in the north of Italy, went on alert this Wednesday (15) after the Lambro River overflowed due to the heavy rains that hit the region last night.
According to local authorities, the wave of bad weather caused flooding in some areas and significant traffic problems throughout the Lombardy region.
The most affected provinces are Milan , Varese and Lodi.
The Fire Department carried out more than 100 flood-related interventions in Milan, where the routes of several buses and trams had to be diverted.
In the neighborhood on the banks of the Lambro River, streets and squares were flooded and several buildings were evacuated. Firefighter divers rescued a disabled woman who was stranded in her home, where the water reached one and a half meters high. The elderly woman was hospitalized.
The storms caused authorities to activate the tank that protects the Niguarda, Pratocentario and Isola neighborhoods of Milan from possible flooding from the Seveso River.
“River levels have risen with overnight rain. Once again this vital work has come into operation and is protecting our city”, explained Milan's Security and Civil Defense advisor, Marco Granelli, demanding “maximum caution” from the population.
According to the weather forecast, there is a risk of strong thunderstorms with hail in northern Italy, particularly in the Po Plain, while intense heat will affect the south of the country over the next 48 hours. (Handle)
