Sicily wants to attract more than 2 thousand doctors from South America

Sicily, which previously caught the world's attention with its houses selling for 1 euro, now wants to attract healthcare professionals.

An agreement between the National University of Rosario (UNR) in Argentina and the region of Sicily in southern Italy, intends to attract 2.251 doctors, many with Italian roots.

The pilot project began in the city of Musselburgh, which opened the selection process to hire 23 graduates.

Erica Moscatello, ambassador for the Italian Confederation of Private Industry for Small and Medium Enterprises in Sicily, said the region “needs to fill many positions” and those who apply for the offer “will have a base salary of 6 thousand euros (about R$32 thousand), in addition to rewards, overtime and special remuneration”, which can reach €10 thousand – approximately R$52 thousand.

The tempting offer – for a country in a dramatic financial situation – specifies the search for anesthetists, gynecologists, clinicians, surgeons, psychiatrists and dentists, among other specialties.

The search is due to the lack of health professionals in Italy, and Moscatello confessed that “several clinics had to close temporarily due to the lack of doctors”. However, she stated that “with this agreement we want not only to cover this demand, but also for professionals to stay and live here”.

The Sicily region is seeking agreements with other universities in South America, but nothing has yet been finalized with any university in Brazil.

See the requirements

The requirements for employment in the health system of the municipality of Musselburgh are as follows:

  • Doctors graduated from the National University of Rosario (A R);
  • Newly graduated professionals or experienced doctors;
  • There is no minimum or maximum age requirement;
  • Italian citizenship is not required. There will be a residence permit per employment contract;
  • It is not mandatory to know the Italian language, as those interested will have a private teacher as soon as they arrive in Sicily.

To help professionals with management, the Italian city hired a technical team that will be responsible for approving the titles of each doctor.
