Italian-Argentine Senator Mario Borghese (Maie) presented, this Thursday (12), a parliamentary interpellation to Ministers Matteo Piantedosi (Interior) and Antonio Tajani (Foreign Affairs).
The parliamentarian questions the new charge of €250 for Italian citizenship process iure sanguinis for minor children born outside Italy.
According to Borghese, the amount is included in the circular published by the Ministry of the Interior on May 28, after the conversion into law of decree 36 / 2025. The document clarifies that the acquisition of citizenship by declaration, in accordance with article 4 of Law no. 91/1992, is subject to the payment of the so-called “contribution” to the ministry.
Until then, the process of recognizing citizenship for minors, when they were the children of an Italian citizen, was free.
The senator believes that the new tax imposes an economic obstacle that unequally affects families with more children or fewer resources. “This burden can generate inequality in access to citizenship, which must be avoided,” he said.
Borghese asked the ministers to evaluate, within legal limits, ways to suspend or exempt the charge. “The current measure penalizes, without proportional justification, those who have full right to recognition,” he said.
