The President of the Portuguese Republic, António José Seguro, and the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, called for the return of emigrants and Portuguese descendants to the country, during a ceremony with the Portuguese community. in Luxembourg last Saturday (7th).

The event marked the start of the celebrations for Portugal Day, Camões Day and Portuguese Communities Day, celebrated on June 10th. It was the first time the date was commemorated in Luxembourg and also the first time Seguro and Montenegro celebrated it together.

“Portugal needs all of you, and we count on you a lot for our future,” said Montenegro, who highlighted the country's development potential and mentioned the return “that we hope many can have to Portugal.”

Seguro was more direct in stating that Portugal "It is a country that wants to welcome back its own." According to the head of state, this includes "those who emigrated and those who were born abroad, but who feel Portugal as a part of themselves."

Work and the Portuguese language

The president reiterated an idea he had presented to young Portuguese people in Madrid, on his first trip abroad since taking office on March 9. "Portugal is an extraordinary country to live in. And it should also be an extraordinary country to work in," he stated.

Seguro also reinforced the role of the language as a link with the diaspora. "Portugal has a responsibility to guarantee communities in the diaspora a network that allows their children to continue learning Portuguese," he said.

Montenegro assured that the government remains committed, along with the Presidency and the Assembly of the Republic, to strengthening ties with the communities. "We want a State that is increasingly closer to the Portuguese people abroad, regardless of the distance," he stated.

Both welcomed Portugal's recent election to the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member. They both highlighted the significant presence of the Portuguese community in Luxembourg, which represents more than 13% of the country's population. The celebrations continue on Terceira Island in the Azores on Tuesday and Wednesday. (With information from the Lusa news agency)
