If Italy turns a blind eye to us, descendants of Italians, perhaps it is time for us to respond with something impossible to ignore: our vote.
In June, we will be called upon to decide on five referendums. Among them, one in particular directly addresses the issue of Italian citizenship—a topic we know firsthand. The proposal is simple: reduce the time required for a foreigner residing in Italy to apply for citizenship from 10 to 5 years. It doesn't seem radical; it seems fair. Even more so when we remember that many Italian descendants, with Italian surnames, have waited decades for recognition.
Have you ever heard a deputy prime minister, a certain Tajani, say that foreigners represent a threat to national security? We listen. And if today we are considered “outsiders”, we will show that even from the outside, we know where we want to go. And we will get in through voting.
Vote YES. And show that you care
This referendum is more than an administrative reform. It is a chance to say: “I am here. I am part of this.” If Italy doubts our connection, let it feel our presence at the polls.
Vote YES It is to support those who live in Italy, who build the country every day and still face closed doors. It is to take a step towards a more just, less bureaucratic and more humane citizenship. And, yes, it is also a way of putting pressure on a system that despises its own descendants, but profits from the idea of “Italianity”.
If you have ever faced queues, expense and contempt trying to recognize your citizenship, this vote is also your message. Vote YES. For your history. For our presence. For justice.
The Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and his troupe want the NO in the referendum.
