Salvini signs decree to issue Italian identity abroad

The Italian Interior Minister, Matteo Salvini, signed this Thursday (25) the decree approving the issuance of the Electronic Identity Card (CIE) for Italian citizens residing abroad.

According to the technical regulation prepared and published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the CIE may be requested and issued through the consulate network, in European Union countries and in those where the Electronic Identity Card guarantees freedom of movement, such as Switzerland, Monaco, San Marino, Norway, Vatican, Liechtenstein, Andorra and Iceland.

“From now on, consulates are authorized to issue the CIE, for Italian citizens who request it, in accordance with the Ministerial Decree of December 23, 2015, which established the technical means of issuing the CIE. Electronic Identity Card”, says the note published on the Ministry of the Interior website.

However, the system will enter an experimental phase only in the consulates of Vienna, Athens and Nice. There is no forecast for the start of issuing the document at Italian consulates in Brazil.

Commission put pressure 

The issuance of the Electronic Identity Card Abroad is a victory for the Commission for Foreign and Constitutional Affairs, in Italian Parliament.

In June of this year, members of parliament approved a resolution to urge the Italian government to issue the CIE (Foreigner Identity Card) to Italians residing abroad. Italian-Brazilian MP Luiz Lorenzato, from the Lega party, was part of the commission.

Until then, the document was only issued to citizens residing in Italy and some European Union countries.
