The number of the “fiscal code” (Italian CPF), one of the most important pieces of information for Italian citizens, can be known before starting the citizenship process, for example.

To do this, simply access the website www.codicefiscale.com and fill in the basic information fields such as surname, first name, country of origin, gender and date of birth.

The website will then provide you with a 16-character code consisting of 9 letters and 7 numbers. This code is used to identify all Italian taxpayers and all foreign citizens born or domiciled in Italy for tax and administrative purposes.

The fiscal code was introduced by Presidential Decree No. 605 of September 29, 1973 in order to make financial administration more efficient and is issued by the Italian Fiscal Agency, the Inland Revenue.

Rules

To calculate the code, some rules are followed: the first three letters are taken from the consonants of the surname or surnames, if there is more than one. If there are not enough consonants, the vowels are also removed, but they always come after the consonants.

The next two letters are taken from the consonants of the first name or names if there is more than one. If the name does not have enough consonants, the vowels are also removed. In the case of two names separated by commas, only the first will be considered.

The next two numbers coincide with the year of birth and the letter indicates the month of birth (a=January, b=February, c=March, etc.).

The other two numbers indicate the day of birth. For women you need to add 40, so if the birth day is 8, the two digits will be 48.

A letter and three numbers indicate the municipality of birth. For those born in Brazil, for example, the abbreviation begins with Z and is followed by the number that identifies the state of birth.

It is worth remembering that the site does not belong to any official Italian government body, but the results are extremely accurate.

Okay, now that you know that you can find out your Italian CPF, just go to the website and satisfy your curiosity!
