It's rare to come across a home in Italy that doesn't have a bidet, and this prevalence isn't just due to the national emphasis on hygiene.
Tourists, especially Brazilians, and future inhabitants of the country are often surprised by the proliferation of these devices, while Italians cannot build a bathroom without one.
The presence of the bidet in all Italian residences it is not just a cultural quirk; since 1975, it has been a legal requirement. According to Article 7 of the Ministerial Decree of 05/07/1975, all homes in Italy are required to have at least one bathroom equipped with a toilet, bidet, bathtub or shower, and a sink.
This requirement is taken seriously by building regulators, preventing new properties from being approved for occupation without these essential elements.
New home builders face the need to incorporate such facilities to obtain legal approval. Furthermore, the sale of properties that do not comply with these standards may be difficult.
Italian law also establishes detailed specifications, such as the minimum distance between the bidet and other elements of the bathroom. The bidet must be located at least 20 centimeters away from the toilet and bathtub, and at least 10 centimeters from the sink.
