Brazil said this Saturday (2) that it is working to renew the bilateral agreement for the recognition of driver's licenses between Italy and Brazil, which expired on January 13, 2023.
In response to a request for clarification, Adrualdo de Lima Catão, national secretary of traffic at the Ministry of Transport (SENATRAN), said that the Brazilian government only received a response from the Italian government last week requesting new information and analysis.
“One in particular is giving us some work. The sending of all old driving licenses, specific models by state, which we are recovering together with the printers”, said Catão in response to the publication by Italian deputy Fabio Porta, in Instagram.
The secretary stated that Brazil will comply with all of Italy's demands and will move forward with this in the coming days. “I reiterate that SENATRAN is attentive and working hard to forward everything that Italy has asked us to do since the beginning of the process,” he said.
The lack of renewal of the agreement prevents thousands of Brazilian workers in Italy and Italians in Brazil from converting their driver's license in the destination country.
Italian deputy Fabio Porta stated that personally and officially pressured the Italian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Transport, with letters and a question discussed in the Transport Committee of the Chamber of Deputies. He also met with those responsible for the relevant Brazilian ministries.
The Italian deputy stated that he is confident in the positive conclusion of the renewal of the agreement, but highlighted the urgency of reaching a solution soon. “It is the best way to honor the historic friendly relationship between our two countries”, concluded Porta.
