To promote the city that is at risk of becoming a ghost, an NGO asked Airbnb for help
Houses for sale for 1 euro, a fountain that pours free wine for 24 hours… Italy is a champion at capturing the world’s attention. Now, the marketing campaign is offering three months of free vacation to four candidates in the stunning Basilicata, land of pecorino cheese, archaeological paradise and classic Mediterranean lifestyle.
The unprecedented initiative comes from the global accommodation platform, Airbnb, in partnership with a small Italian non-governmental organization, Wonder Grottole, which offers three months of free holidays for four people in the Italian city of Grottole, in the province of Matera.
In return, the lucky ones will have to serve as guides for tourists. The initiative already has a supporting video and candidates can subscribe here.
The idea is to draw the world's attention to Grottole, an incredible and beautiful Italian city that, like many others, is experiencing the exodus of its residents, who are moving to other regions of Italy and neighboring countries.
The mountainous region of Grottole has 2.200 inhabitants — 300 of whom live in the historic center — and around 6oo houses are abandoned.
To promote the city, as it runs the risk of becoming a “ghost town”, the NGO asked Airbnb for help. During the months of June to August, the four chosen people will have to learn about the culture and language of the region, as well as acquire knowledge about areas related to agriculture, such as growing food, producing olive oil or beekeeping. Grottole has a great tradition in agricultural cultivation and ceramic production. Afterwards, these experiences should be shared with future tourists.

Candidates must be over 18 years old and have a good level of English. The four selected will not receive a salary, but food and other basic costs will be included, up to a limit of 900 euros per month. Travel expenses will be paid by Airbnb. Accommodation will be provided by the NGO.
The die is cast.
