In Italy, courses are divided into cycles

The organization of university studies in Italy differs significantly from that in Brazil. Therefore, you should pay close attention when choosing the course you will take at an Italian university. University courses are divided into cycles.

Laurea – 1st Cycle

The Laurea Course represents the first level of university studies and consists of 180 university credits, distributed over a maximum of 20 exams. The Laurea lasts three years and at the end of the course the degree obtained is Dottore.

The objective of the course is to guarantee general preparation regarding the basic disciplines and characteristics of the chosen course, as well as professional training to promote entry into the world of work.

1st Cycle

Laurea: 180 credits, duration 3 years.
Access title: Secondary school diploma.
Academic qualification: Doctorate.

Laurea Magistrale – Unique Cycle

The Laurea Magistrale a Ciclo Unico Course lasts five years (300 credits distributed over a maximum of 30 exams) or six years (360 credits distributed over a maximum of 36 exams).

You can access the course with a secondary school diploma.

The objective of the course is to provide advanced level training for the exercise of regulated professions and highly qualified activities.

These are courses from Laurea to Cycle Unico, regulated by European regulations: Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Dental Prosthesis, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, Architecture, Building Engineering – Architecture, Law, Primary Education Sciences and Conservation and Restoration of cultural goods.

After completing the Laurea Magistrale a Ciclo Unico (LMCU), the student will be able to enroll in the following courses:

University Master of II Livello
Corsi of Alta Formazione, of permanent or ricurrent Aggiornamento.
Specialization schools
Ph.D

Studying in Italy: Single Cycle

300 credits: Architecture, Chimica e Tecnologia Farmaceutiche, Farmacia,Giurisprudenza, Ingegneria Edile/Architettura, Scienze della Formazione Primaria, Medicina Veterinaria.
360 credits: Medicine and Chirurgia and Dentistry and Protesi Dentaria.
Access title: Secondary school diploma.
Academic qualifications: Dottore Magistrale.

Laurea Magistrale – 2nd Cycle

The Laurea Magistrale Program constitutes the second level of university studies. Before the reform introduced by Ministerial Decree 207/04, this type of degree was called Laurea Specialistica.

The Laurea Magistrale program lasts two years and, at the end of the course, the student achieves the Dottore Magistrale qualification. The objective of the Laurea Magistrale course is to provide advanced training for carrying out highly qualified activities in specific environments.

After obtaining the Laurea Magistrale course, students have the necessary degree to access other courses, such as:

Corsi of Alta Formazione, of permanent or ricurrent Aggiornamento.
Specialization schools
Ph.D

2st Cycle

Laurea Magistrale: 120 credits, duration 2 years.
Access title: University Diploma, Laurea.
Academic qualification: Dottore Magistrale.

Research and Specialization Doctorate – 3rd Cycle

3st Cycle

Dottorato di Ricerca: lasts 3/4 years.
Access title: L. Magistrale, L. Magistrale a cyclo unico.
Academic qualification: Dottore di Ricerca.

Scuola di Specializzazione: definitive duration of the didactic regolamento of the corso.
Access title: L. Magistrale, L. Magistrale a cyclo unico.
Academic qualification: Specialist.

Studying in Italy: Professional courses

Corsi professionalizzanti

University Master I live: 60 credits, lasts 1 year.
Access title: Laurea, L. Magistrale, L. Magistrale a cyclo unico.
Academic qualifications: Not valid.

University Master II Livello: 60 credits, lasts 1 year.
Access title: L. Magistrale, L. Magistrale a cyclo unico.
Academic qualifications: Not valid.

2021 ranking of the best Italian universities

The traditional University of Bologna came first in its category (mega universities), with 91,8 points (0,3 more than in 2020), just ahead of the universities of Padua (88,7) and Rome La Sapienza (85,5), which displaced Florence (85,0) from third place.   

Considering only public institutions, the ranking also places Perugia universities (large) as leaders in their segments, with 93,3 points; Trento (averages), with 97,3; Camerino (small), with 98,2; and Milan (polytechnics), with 93,3.   

Among the private ones, Bocconi had 96,2 points among large institutions, while the Free International University of Social Studies Guido Carli (Luiss), of Rome, won as the best medium size, with 94,2; The University of Bolzano, with 101 points, leads the ranking among small universities.   

The survey is the main reference in university quality in Italy and also points out that there was a 4,4% growth in enrollments in the last academic year, despite the Covid-19 pandemic. The rate of university students among the 19-year-old population in the country reached 56,8%, with 65,7% among women and 48,5% among men

Studying in Italy is a matter of prestige

Italy is very famous for its Fine Arts, Architecture and Law faculties. This whole tradition in university education means that thousands of people move to go to college in Italy every year.
