Adriana Albinos is one of the most influential Italian women in the biomedical field
The BBC has revealed its list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2020, and one Italian and two Brazilians are on the list of women of the year.
Adriana Albini, professor of General Pathology at the University of Milan-Bicocca, is the only Italian included by the English broadcaster on the list of those leading change in the year affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Minas Gerais model Lea T. and São Paulo teacher Cibele Racy are the two names highlighted as female leaders in Brazil.
Who is Adriana Albini

Head of the Vascular Biology Laboratory at Irccs MultiMedica, scientific director of the MultiMedica Onlus Foundation, as the British broadcaster Albini points out, Adriana Albini is “the first Italian woman elected to the Board of Directors of American Association for Cancer Research, one of the oldest and most prestigious oncology associations in the world.
Adriana is president of Top Italian Women Scientists, the club of the most influential Italian scientists in the biomedical field.
Born in Venice in 1955, married and mother of two children, Albini is also a master fencing champion: in 2018 she won the bronze medal at the 2018 World Veterans Championship and silver at the 2015 European Championship.
Brazilians on the list
Cibele Racy She is a teacher, retired public school director, and was a pioneer in the construction of an elementary school with racial equality in São Paulo.
She also reviewed all of her school's practices to make it inclusive without distinction of race, gender or social class.
Leandra Medeiros Cerezo, 40 years old, known by her stage name Leah T. She is an open transsexual and defender of the LGBT cause.
Tribute
The list includes women scientists, public health experts, activists, politicians and educators.
According to the broadcaster, the main objective of the list is to honor women who sacrificed themselves to help people in 2020. A difficult year due to the pandemic. Therefore, one of the names on the list is blank, in the form of a tribute.
The list also includes actresses Jane Fonda and Michelle Yeoh, star of the new 'Avatar', Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin and scientist Sarah Gilbert, who leads Oxford University's research into a vaccine for the new coronavirus.
