Almost half of Italy's adult population is overweight or obese, and around a third do not take part in any sporting activity, according to a study on health risk factors conducted by the National Institute of Statistics (Istat).
A research was held in 2021 and heard 45 thousand people from across the country. According to the survey, 46,2% of the population over 18 years of age is overweight (34,2% overweight and 12% obese).

Although high, these values are in line with pre-pandemic figures: in 2019, 46,3% of Italy's adult inhabitants were overweight, with 35,4% being overweight and 10,9% being obese.
Furthermore, 33,7% of people did not practice physical activity in 2021, a drop of two percentage points compared to 2019.
On the other hand, the rate of smokers in the population over 14 years old rose from 18,4% before the pandemic to 19% in 2021. The survey showed that, despite the high proportion of the population subjected to risk factors, long periods of isolation to contain Covid-19 did little to change the scenario. (Handle)
