The bill that provides for the Italian citizenship ius scholae received 728 amendments, according to Giuseppe Brescia (M5S), rapporteur and president of the Chamber's Constitutional Affairs Committee.
The party that presented the most amendments was the League, with 484 requests for modification of the text, followed by the Fratelli d'Italia, which presented 167 amendments – the two parties are those that openly oppose the jus scholae. The Democratic Party suggested 15 changes.
“In the coming days I will meet with representatives of all parties to define possible points of convergence on the various requests for changes. In the last few weeks in the Committee we have discussed everything in an orderly manner and we will continue to do so also in this long-awaited bill. A question of civilization that must be removed from the electoral campaign of any party”, said Brescia.
The unified text presented by the rapporteur stipulates that a foreign child born in Italy or who entered Italy before the age of 12 may acquire Italian citizenship upon application.
The Supreme Court reaffirmed: citizenship is born with the person.
- New legal front opened
- Processes can still be filed.
- Individual assessment before any decision.
To do so, you must have resided legally and without interruption in Italy and have regularly attended, within the national territory, for at least five years, one or more school cycles in institutions belonging to the national education system or three-year professional education and training courses. or four years leading to a professional qualification.
The citizenship bill jus scholae is practically a replacement for ius soli, a dream always pursued but never (until now) realized by the Italian left.
It is estimated that the bill will have strong resistance in the Italian parliament. The vote in the Chamber of Deputies should take place in May, and then obtain definitive approval from the Senate in September or October 2022.
