The president of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, indicated that he will not have another term as head of state because “he is old”.
The speech took place during a visit to a school in Roma this Wednesday (19).
Talking about when he was chosen for the Quirinal, the president told the children that he was “worried because he knew how difficult the mission was”.
“But two things helped me: I have great collaborators, but above all, the fact that Italy has a Constitution in which there is not just one body that decides, but the decisions are distributed among several bodies. The President of the Republic must know everyone, follow everyone in order to intervene with suggestions. But, in eight months my term ends. I am old, but in a few months I will be able to rest”, Mattarella told those present.
For the children who accompanied his visit, the president also highlighted the importance of constitutional laws, such as “article 2, which talks about inviolable rights, and article 3, which indicates the value of equality and this is the main right”.
“We are all equal before the law, whatever the color of our skin, whatever our ethnicity, we are all equal. There is one thing that the pandemic has reminded us of, with everyone being forced to wear masks: we are all equal, that is the foundation of rights, the equality of citizens,” he added.
Mattarella took office in 2015
Mattarella is 79 years old and assumed the role of president of Italy in February 2015. During his presidency, the country had four prime ministers, some with more than one period at the head of the government: Matteo Renzi, Paolo Gentiloni, Giuseppe Conte and, currently, Mario Draghi.
In his career, he was a judge at the Constitutional Court (2011-2015) and is a leader positively recognized by all Italian political currents. With his extensive legal and constitutional knowledge, Mattarella enjoys public admiration and is a pacifying point in troubled Italian politics. In addition to his public life, Mattarella also had his older brother, Piersanti, murdered by mafia in the 1980s.
