The mayor of Polistena, Michele Tripodi, affiliated with the Italian Communist Party, defended the implementation of “jus soli” during an event promoted by the Italian Islamic Federation in the Calabrian city. The “ius soli” grants the Italian citizenship by birth, but is not covered by Italian law.
The event, entitled “Religious values and citizenship”, aimed to promote the integration of immigrants in Calabria and reinforce the values of the Italian Republic.
During the meeting held at the local city hall, according to the portal Il Reggino, Tripodi highlighted Polistena's advances in the area of immigration and reception, and stated that the “ius soli” is fundamental to guaranteeing equal rights for all citizens, regardless of their origin.
Islam in Italy
- It is the second most professed religion in the country, with around 3,7% of the population identifying as Muslim.
- An estimated 2,3 million Muslims reside in Italy, the majority of them Sunnis.
- Defining the exact number of believers is a challenge due to the lack of official censuses and the dynamic nature of immigrant populations.
- PEW Research, a research institution on social issues, estimates that there are 25 million Muslims in the European Union.
