Vacancy was advertised in the jobs section of The Economist magazine
O Italy's Ministry of Culture has launched an international call for proposals to find a new director to the archaeological site of Pompeii, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the country and crucial for unraveling the history of the ancient Roman Empire.
The vacancy advert was published in the jobs section of the British magazine The Economist, and says that the director “will oversee the administrative, organizational and financial planning activities” of Pompeii, in addition to taking care of the site’s cultural programs.
The salary is 148.837,25 euros per year, the equivalent of R$950, plus bonuses. Candidates can register for the selection process until November 3rd.
The new director will replace Massimo Osanna, appointed general director of State Museums at the Ministry of Cultural Assets. Located on the outskirts of Naples, the archaeological site of Pompeii received almost 4 million visitors in 2019, second only to the Colosseum of Rome (7,5 million) and for the Gallerie degli Uffizi, in Florence (4,5 million).
However, due to the new coronavirus pandemic, attendance in Pompeii has seen a 70% reduction since the beginning of 2020. The park is home to an ancient Roman city devastated by an eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 AD.., and excavations and restorations at the site continue to this day.
The opening of an international notice follows a model adopted in 2015 by the Minister of Cultural Goods, Dario Franceschini. At the time, the Italian government selected a German, Eike Schmidt, to direct the Uffizi, the world's main Renaissance museum.
The choice of a foreigner generated controversy in Italy, but Schmidt's successful tenure at the Florentine institution left the controversies in the past. (HANDLE).
