The Italian police arrested, this Monday (16), Matteo Messina Denaro, the most wanted mobster in the country who had been wanted for three decades. Denaro, who was arrested in the capital of Sicily, Palermo, is one of the mafiosi of Cosa Nostra.
The mobster was in a private clinic in Palermo, La Maddalena, where he was receiving medical treatment for a tumor, according to Italian police, according to the La Repubblica.
“He did not resist” arrest despite having a device set up capable of “dealing with any emergency”, said political commander Pasquale Angelosanto, quoted by the same newspaper.
Giorgia Meloni, Italian Prime Minister, has already reacted to the news, stating that it is “a great victory for the State”.
The last “big” mafia boss on the run
Matteo Messina Denaro is the son of one of the historical mobsters from Castelvetrano (Trapani, Sicily), Francesco Messina Denaro, known as Don Ciccio — a historical ally of Totò Riina. He was, from an early age, introduced to life in the mafia: it is said that at the age of 14 he already knew how to shoot a gun and that at 18 he had already committed murders.
Matteo Messina Denaro was the last “big” Mafia boss still at large.
