Brazilian pilot killed in World War II is honored in Italy

The Italian city of plateau, located in the region of Emilia Romagna, decorated Lieutenant John Richardson Cordeiro e Silva, killed during combat during the Second World War.

The event was held on 03/11, and was attended by the representative of Brazilian air force (FAB), aviator colonel André Luiz Alves Ferreira.

“This is a fair tribute to Lieutenant Cordeiro, who voluntarily left Brazil to fight in the skies of Italy, lived the harsh reality of war and lost his life in defense of freedom and democracy,” said the colonel.

Lieutenant Cordeiro, as it was known, belonged to the First Fighter Aviation Group (1st GAVCA).

He was the first Brazilian pilot to die in combat during the Second World War, on November 6, 1944, when he was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft artillery while flying over the village of Livergnano, belonging to Pianoro.

Very close to the site of the aircraft crash, a monument was built in his memory.

Due to the necessary prevention measures due to the new Coronavirus pandemic, the ceremony was reduced, to comply with all protocols provided by the Italian government.

Two wreaths were laid in memory of the Lieutenant Cordeiro, one offered by the local city hall and the other by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).

After the ceremony ended, a visit was made to the “The Winter Line Museum”, in Livergnano, where a collection of military objects from the Second World War is on display, such as radios, helmets, canteens and cutlery.

In a prominent place, there are small parts of the aircraft P-47 Thunderbolt piloted by Lieutenant Cordeiro on the mission in which he lost his life.
