The document is addressed to the Italian government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Fratelli d'Italia party. The signatories state that the measure “threatens to limit the right to recognition of Italian citizenship for the descendants of emigrants”.
According to the organizers, the decree breaks with a historical Italian tradition. Over the course of more than a century, millions of Italians have migrated and formed communities around the world. Their descendants maintain ties with their country of origin and represent Italian culture in different contexts.
The text of the petition highlights three main points of criticism of DL Tajani:
- The project “betrays Italy’s history” by disregarding the importance of the diaspora;
- Restricts the principle of jus sanguinis, basis for the recognition of citizenship by descent;
- It minimizes the role of descendants as cultural ambassadors of Italy abroad.

The petition proposes three measures to the government:
- Immediate withdrawal of DL Tajani;
- Recognition of Italian communities abroad as an essential part of the nation;
- Improvement in consular services, with greater agility in citizenship processes.
The initiative invites Italians and supporters of the cause around the world to sign and spread the petition. “Depriving descendants of citizenship means denying their role in the prestige of Italy,” the text states.
