Who has never heard the saying “the world goes around”?
Because Venice has just experienced this firsthand.
Exactly two years ago, the city – a world heritage site – moved to limit the number of tourists because its population felt threatened by the increase in the flow of visitors.
Residents protested against large cruise ships. Fees were created to charge foreigners who arrived on the famous island.
Now, Venice is united to combat the drastic drop in tourist numbers due to the coronavirus epidemic.
“You are Piazza San Marco, the aperitif we offer”, says the slogan. Free drinks if you want to sit in one of the bar chairs in the famous Piazza San Marco.
Some establishments in the square will offer a free drink for every drink purchased. The appeal applies to residents and visitors.
The coronavirus will pass, as will high tides, but the lesson remains.
Whoever was at the top yesterday may fall today and vice versa.
