The father of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced this Thursday (31) that he has decided to apply for French citizenship.
According to him, it is to maintain ties with the European Union (EU) after Brexit.
According to Reuters, Stanley Johnson, a former member of the European Parliament who voted for the United Kingdom to remain in the EU, told radio RTL who intended to become a French citizen due to his strong family ties to France.
“If I understand correctly, I am French. My mother was born in France, her mother was completely French, as was her grandfather. So for me, it's about getting back what I already have. And that makes me very happy”, said Stanley, in French.
“I will always be European, that’s for sure. You can't say to the British 'you're not European'. Having a link with the European Union is important,” he added.

When applying for citizenship, the minister's father made it clear that he does not believe in Brexit.
It should be remembered that Boris Johnson was one of the public faces of the campaign that defended the United Kingdom's exit from the EU, claiming that Great Britain could prosper as a sovereign and independent nation.
Still, this Wednesday, the Prime Minister adopted a more conciliatory stance when Parliament approved the new trade agreement with the EU.
“This is not the end of Britain as a European country. We are, in many ways, the European civilization par excellence and we will continue to be so,” she said.
This Friday (1), the United Kingdom officially ceases to be in the EU's orbit, after a 48-year connection.
