The National Agency for Regional Health Services (Agenas), headed by the Italian Ministry of Health, assessed the performance of 53 public hospitals in the country, considering several criteria, such as waiting times and quality of emergency services.
The assessment, according to the newspaper 'Corriere della Sera', revealed that 12 hospitals had a low performance, 32 had an average performance and only 9 had a high performance.
Italian hospitals were evaluated by several criteria, such as emergency care within a period of 8 hours, waiting time recommended by law, low number of inadequate high-risk admissions, relevant ratio between doctors and nurses per bed, diagnostic tests with non-obsolete equipment and adequate financial situation of each hospital structure.
Other elements, such as available medical specialties, technology and infrastructure, also play a crucial role in providing excellent healthcare.
