The World Health Organization (WHO) warned this Thursday (4) that Europe is once again at the “epicenter” of the Covid-19 pandemic and stated that the current rate of new infections raises “serious concerns”.
Hans Kluge, WHO director for Europe, commented in a virtual press conference that the new coronavirus could still cause another half a million deaths in the region by February, if the rate of infections continues to increase.
“We are once again at the epicenter. The current rate of cases in the 53 countries of the European region raises serious concerns. If we maintain this pace, we could have another half a million deaths from Covid-19 by February”, warned Kluge.
According to the WHO, Europe had a 6% increase in the number of new cases of the disease last week compared to the previous week. In the same period, the number of deaths increased by 12%.
In addition to the WHO, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) also expressed concern about the epidemiological situation of the new coronavirus on the continent.
“The epidemiological situation of Covid-19 in Europe is very worrying. It is extremely important that everyone is vaccinated, because no one is protected as long as they protect themselves. Precautions against the disease must be followed carefully”, informed the EMA.
