Although Italy is wonderful from north to south, there are cities where life is undoubtedly better than in others: from security to the proper functioning of the city's institutions.
And what can we say about the rude behavior of the inhabitants? And which cities are considered the most polite in Italy?
A Prely, a global language learning platform, which interviewed more than 1.558 inhabitants, created a curious ranking taking into account the most widespread good habits and, at the same time, the rude behavior of citizens.
On a scale of 1 to 10 (where 10 is the maximum level of rudeness), experts gave each of the 19 participating Italian cities a score on 12 different behaviors, such as passing too much time on the cell phone in public, jumping in line, not slowing down the car near pedestrians, speaking loudly in public, not saying hello, not giving a tip, for example.
According to the ranking, among the 10 rudest cities, seven are in northern Italy: in most cases, they are places where living spaces are reduced to a minimum and traffic is a real problem.
The roughest is Venice, the capital of the Veneto region, and one of the most visited cities in Italy – 13 million tourists annually – which ranked 17th.
Check out the ranking of the 10 most educated cities (or not) in Italy
10. Taranto
We start immediately with a city in southern Italy: Taranto, in the Apulia region, is in tenth place in the ranking, which received a score of 6,03 – the average rudeness index in Italy is 6,10.
9. Palermo
In ninth position we find Palermo, which has an index of 6,02: interestingly, this is one of the few cities where, according to data obtained by Prely, locals are considered ruder than foreigners.
8. Bari
Eighth place for Bari, which obtained a total score of 5,94: the rude behavior in which its citizens most often persist is the bad habit of using their cell phones in public places.
7. Nápoles
The town of Nápoles shines among the most educated, taking seventh place with a score of 5,90: also in this case, the weak point seems to be the inappropriate use of the cell phone.
6. Messina
The sixth position goes to Messina, with a rudeness index of 5,89: the Sicilian city is particularly virtuous in leaving tips, so much so that it has already won the title of most generous in Italy.
5. Bologna
Bologna (what it was the province with the best quality of life in 2022) can boast a good fifth place among the most educated cities in Italy, with a total score of 5,87. Its inhabitants are among those who most respect the community and have a warm attitude towards others.
4. Verona
In fourth place we find the city of Verona, which scored 5,66. What behavior did its inhabitants do best? Apparently, it's all about the good habit of waiting in line.
3. Modena
And now we come to the podium: Modena is in third place, with a score of 5,60. This is the city where foreigners are considered ruder than locals.
2. Florença
Score of 5,60 also for Florença, which won the silver medal: its citizens are particularly respectful of others and are courteous to service personnel.
1. Padua
Lastly, the most educated city in Italy is Padua (or Padova, in Italian), with a rating of 5,18: among its inhabitants there is respect for personal spaces and little noise is made in public. It is interesting to note how the most virtuous city in Italy is found in Veneto, which also has the rudest city (Venice).
