One of the false information about Italian citizenship circulated this Monday, 12, after being published by the Rio de Janeiro newspaper The Globe, based on the Colombian newspaper Weather, from Colombia.

The news claimed that Italy would automatically “grant” citizenship and passport European to people whose surnames appeared on a certain Italian list.“Italy will give as a gift the passport European passport to people who have any of these surnames” (“Italy will grant the European passport to people who have any of these surnames”, in the original), says the sensationalist title.

A sensationalist headline in the newspaper El Tiempo misleads readers about Italian citizenship. The headline stated that “Italy will give a European passport as a gift to those with certain surnames.

The content was echoed without checking by vehicles such as the antagonist e Brazil 247 (which was taken down hours later), in a clear serious error in calculation. In journalistic jargon, this is a belly — when an editorial office publishes incorrect information due to a failure to verify it.

The fake news contrasts with the current scenario in Italy. A new bill, originating from the Decree-Law 36, proposes tighten the rules for the recognition of citizenship. The text should go to the plenary in the next few days and, if approved, will limit the right only to children and grandchildren of Italians, making access difficult for more distant generations.

The process of Italian citizenship requires documentation that proves the direct descent with an Italian citizen. Italy adopts the principle of the right of blood (right of blood), which recognizes nationality based on family origin — never just by surname.
