With 35 million fans, of which 15,5 million are regular practitioners (almost a third of the more than 59 million Italian citizens), the sport in 2021 generated 78,8 billion euros – around R$418 billion – in revenue in Italy, a value equivalent to 3% of the country's GDP.
The data appears in the first Observatory on the Sport System, created by Banco Ifis Research Office to respond to the European Commission's request to Member States to measure the economic dimension of all components of sport and provide public and private decision-makers with fundamental data and information for strategic decision-making.
Considering that in 2019 sport generated 95,9 billion euros (almost 20 billion more than in 2021), with an impact on Italian GDP of 3,6%, and in the world of work with 389 thousand vacancies, the observatory took the pre-pandemic year as the average year to be considered in the immediate future.
