The Italian Senator Mario Borghese, vice-president of the Movimento Associativo Italiani all'Estero (MAIE), a party created in Argentina, stated that the recent Decree-Law 36 The text regarding Italian citizenship should be changed in key areas. The statement was made after the unanimous approval of the text by... Council of Ministers from Italy.
“The decree-law on citizenship must be modified in substance and I am confident that this will happen, because a fruitful dialogue has been opened with the government,” Borghese said in an official statement.
The measure, according to him, restricts the right of descendants of Italians born outside Italy to pass on citizenship to their children. The senator presented two amendments that aim to maintain the principle of jus sanguinis, the basis of citizenship through family inheritance, and to curb what he called “easy citizenship”.
Borghese also warned of the risk of statelessness and cited his own case as an example of the contradictions of the decree: even with a strong link to Italian culture, he could not pass on citizenship to his children.
