New Year traditions in Italy

The year 2021 will begin in a sixth-fair and under normal conditions it would have been a great advantage. But with safety regulations due to the coronavirus, the Italians had to change their plans.

Just like in Brazil, New Year is celebrated in Italy with fireworks, which light up the sky, welcoming January 1st.

At midnight, everyone toasts with sparkling wine and greets each other wishing better days in the coming year.

Tradition says that the red is the color of tonight's star and if you want to be lucky next year, you have to wear something in this color.

New Year's dinner varies depending on the region, but there are two traditions that are present on every table, from North to South: trotter e cotechino (codeguim) accompanied by lentils.

The latter represents the money you will accumulate during the year: the more you eat, the more money you will have. So, fill your plate and gorge yourself on lentils.

Many prefer to spend New Year's Eve with friends, following the saying: “Christmas with the family. New Year with friends.”

Epiphany and the good witch Befana in Italy

If in Brazil the New Year actually begins after Carnival, in Italy it is after January 6th that the year really begins.

There is a popular proverb in Italy that says: “L'Epifania tutte le fete le doorway“, that is, “Epiphany takes away all parties”.

Epiphany is a typically Italian festival linked to the cult of the harvest and the passage from the old year to the new year.

It is also a Christian celebration in memory of the visit of the Magi to the Baby Jesus.

But in recent decades, the “good witch” has stolen the spotlight. AND Feast of the Befana.

Meet Befana, the Italian witch of Christmas gifts

Legend has it that a friendly elderly woman called Befana – riding a broomstick – visited the children on the night of January 5th to 6th.

On her back she carried a heavy bag with toys and treats for those who had behaved well the previous year. For those who misbehaved, a lump of coal or ashes were her rewards.

Easter and Easter Monday in Italy

Just like in Brazil, Easter in Italy celebrates the end of Holy Week. Festive Sunday is celebrated with bread and fruit, lamb, savory pies and lots of wine. Many prefer an outdoor barbecue, called barbeque.

Each region, or even each city, has different traditions and celebrations. All are rich in religiosity, traditions, symbolism, history and legends. The brand of Italy.

But the party doesn't end on Easter Sunday. It extends until Monday, call of Easter Monday. It is a national holiday and tradition recommends picnics, walks and visits to tourist attractions and family gatherings.

Pasquetta: why Italy celebrates the Monday after Easter

After all, the date also marks the arrival of spring.

What is the Liberation Festival in Italy?

Also known as the anniversary of the resistance, the Republic Day commemorates the beginning of the end of Nazi domination in Italy during World War II and also the end of Fascist regime of Benito Mussolini.

The liberation of Italy put an end to 20 years of dictatorship and 5 years of war.

What is the Festival of the Republic in Italy

Republic Day , or Republic Festival, is the Italian national holiday celebrated on the day June 2.

In fact, it is officially the main Italian civil national holiday

Why is June 2nd in Italy Republic Day? History and curiosities

On this date, Italians remember the institutional referendum called by universal suffrage on June 2 and 3, 1946, with which Italians were called to the polls to express themselves on the form of government they wanted, monarchy or republic, after the fall of fascism.

What is and what does Ferragosto mean in Italy?

Ferragosto is the most anticipated summer festival in Italy. It has its origins in the history of Ancient Rome, intertwined with Catholic tradition.

The name of the party Ferragosto derives from Latin feriae Augusti (Augustus holiday), in honor of Octavio Augusto, the first Roman emperor, from whom the month of August takes its name.

Ferragosto: the holiday that makes Italy stop

It was a period of rest and celebrations, instituted by the emperor himself in 18 BC, which originated from the tradition of Consualia, a festival of Ancient Rome celebrated in honor of the god Consumption, one of the oldest Roman agrarian deities.

All Souls' Day is not a public holiday in Italy

Unlike Brazil, the holiday in Italy is on the day of all saints, called the All Saints, and not in All Souls' Day.

But All Souls' Day, called Day of the Dead, does not go unnoticed in Italy. Just like in Brazil, people visit the graves of their loved ones, bringing flowers and saying prayers.
