“The community of Italian descendants in the world is estimated at around 180 million people, joined by the almost six million Italian citizens living abroad,” said Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
A population of Italy, according to data from 2020, is 59,55 million people, that is, a third of Italian descendants in the world.
The Annual Report on Italians Abroad, prepared by Migrant Foundation, was released this Tuesday (9) and showed that, until January 1, 2021, there were 5.652.080 citizens living in other countries around the world, an increase of 3% compared to the same day in 2020.
According to Mattarella, the human, cultural and professional significance of this presence is of “inestimable value within the scope of soft power which allows us to place Italy among those whose model of life has the greatest attraction and consideration.”
For the president, who personally attended the event at the foundation's headquarters, the report confirms itself “year after year as a useful instrument for delving deeper into a central topic within the scope of changes that are spreading on a global scale”
O Annual Report on Italians Abroad showed less progress than expected, obviously due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the closure of many borders throughout last year.
When compared to previous years, the record of Italians living abroad (Air) is even higher: 13,6% growth in the last five years and 82% compared to 2006.
There was also an increase in the number of women and families living in other nations during the period. At the beginning of 2021, the difference between genders reached the lowest level in 16 years, when it began to be calculated: 48,1% of those living outside Italy are women. In percentage terms, the number of women living outside the country rose 89,4% compared to 2006.
