Six amendments on the same point.
There are six amendments proposing changes to the same section of Law 74/2025. All deal with extending the deadline for parents of minors to declare their intention to exercise their right to Italian citizenship. The proposals differ only in the new deadline.
Four amendments were presented by the same parliamentary group. Amendment 1.88 does not set a final date and allows minors to express their wishes until they turn 18. Amendment 1.98 extends the deadline to December 30, 2028. Amendment 1.114 extends it to May 31, 2027, while Amendment 1.115 sets the deadline at May 31, 2028.
Two other amendments were presented by a different political group. Amendment 1.123 sets a deadline of December 31, 2027. Amendment 1.124 establishes the longest date among the proposals with a fixed limit, May 31, 2029.
The amendments are competing. If one is approved, the others dealing with the same point are no longer voted on.
What is Milleproroghe?
Milleproroghe is a decree-law approved annually by the Italian government to extend the deadlines of regulations already in force. The name literally means "a thousand extensions".
The text brings together the extension of administrative, fiscal, judicial, and regulatory deadlines that would otherwise expire.
Because it deals with different topics, the decree usually receives amendments with specific measures, such as those related to the recognition of Italian citizenship.
The 2026 Milleproroghe was published on December 29, 2025. The deadline for its conversion into law is February 27, 2026. Until that date, Parliament may discuss, modify, and vote on the proposals included in the text.
Why the extension is important
The deadline set by the government, May 31, 2026, was considered too short by families abroad.
Many parents are unable to schedule appointments at the consulates within the allotted time.
There are also reports of delays in the issuance of certificates by municipalities, which prevented the updating of the AIRE (Registry of Indigenous Peoples of Rio Grande do Sul). (Registration of Italian citizens residing outside of Italy) and the completion of the necessary documentation.
Without an appointment and without updated documents, the request cannot be formalized within the deadline.
