The new book by the Italian writer Antonio Scuratti, known worldwide for his trilogy about the dictator fascist Benito Mussolini, will be released soon from Brazil.
In “The Best Time of Our Life”, published by Manjuba, the non-fiction imprint of Mundaréu, the author tells the story of anti-fascism in Italy based on the life of intellectual Leone Ginzburg (1909-1944).
The idea for the book came about in November 2011, when Scurati read a news story about the discovery of a letter in which, in 1934, Ginzburg, at the time a young professor destined for a brilliant academic career, presented his resignation to the dean of the faculty where he worked so as not to have to swear loyalty to the fascist regime.
Of the 1,3 university professors working in Italy during that period, only 13 did not sign this oath.
Expelled from college, Ginzburg joined the resistance, founded a publishing house and started a family with his beloved, the writer Natalia Ginzburg (1916-1991), but would end up being murdered in a Roman prison in 1944.
In the book, the writer alternates the story of Ginzburg and his circle of friends (Cesare Pavese, Norberto Bobbio, Luigi Einaudi, etc.) with chapters dedicated to the Scurati and the Ferrieri, the paternal and maternal branches of his family.
Thus, it mixes the life and history of an extraordinary personality with the trajectories of ordinary contemporary people, but who had to go through the terrible years of fascism together and fight against the same adversities. (HANDLE)
