Blizzard leaves part of Italy covered in white

Some cities in central and southern Italy have accumulated more than a meter of snow in the last few hours

Meteorological institutes were already warning: a strong mass of Arctic air would freeze half of Europe by the end of this week, and that has been the case. Since yesterday, ice and snow have taken over the landscapes of countries such as Austria, Croatia and Italy. The center and south of the Italian peninsula seem to have borne the brunt of the impact. In the Abruzzo region, on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, some towns have accumulated more than a meter of snow, in the case of Gamberale and Pizzoferrato.

In the last few hours snow has fallen heavily in the Apennines. Higher-elevation towns in the Aquila area experienced traffic disruptions, especially as the snow increased. The city of Lecce, located a few kilometers from the coast, also emerged under white and some areas had their power cut.

In northern Italy, clearings are predominant, but the presence of the sun is not making for a pleasant day, far from it. This morning the frosts were moderate in Modena or Carpi, with temperatures below -5°C recorded. In the next few hours it will continue to snow in the central and southern Adriatic, as well as in the Apennine mountain range.
