The Deputy Prime Minister of Italy and leader of the League, Matteo SalviniShe reiterated her support for chemical castration for those convicted of sex crimes. The statement was made on Saturday, the 25th, during the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Salvini commented on the incident that occurred on October 25th in the park. Tor Tre TesteIn Rome, an 18-year-old girl was raped by a group of men in front of her boyfriend. Three suspects were arrested for gang rape and aggravated robbery, but the investigation points to the possible involvement of at least five people. Those involved, aged between 19 and 20, were already known to the authorities for involvement in drug trafficking.
Speaking on social media, Salvini stated that "conferences and red flags on the face are not enough" and reiterated his call for support for the League's proposal: "Our proposal is in Parliament. Let's put an end to the violence!"
The proposed law mentioned was presented by the League in August 2023. It provides for the use of chemical castration as punishment for those convicted of sexual violence crimes. The text, currently stalled in the Senate, establishes total hormonal blockade with luteinizing hormone agonist (LHRH) medications or equivalent methods. The application of the treatment would depend on a judicial decision, based on the dangerousness of the defendant.
According to Salvini, the proposal has been reiterated over the years. In 2019, the League attempted to include the measure through an amendment to the security decree, but backed down. In 2022, it reintroduced the issue with a formal request for the creation of a technical group in Parliament.
The issue, however, faces resistance within the government itself. The Foreign Minister and leader of Forza Italia, Antonio Tajani has already stated that he is against the adoption of corporal punishments such as chemical castration.
