In Italy, murders reach an all-time low

Forget the 'Ndrangheta, the Camorra or the Cosa Nostra. If you live in Italy, you live safely. The country has the lowest homicide rate in the entire European Union.

According to the National Statistics Institute, Istat, we have reached the lowest level ever. The data was released this Thursday (05).

Only tiny Luxembourg did a little better than us.

According to data collected by the institute and referring to 2018, the national homicide rate for every 100 thousand inhabitants in our country fell to 0,57, the lowest ever recorded by statistics. A systematic decline since the 1990s.

To give you an idea, in Brazil the number is 30,3 homicides for every 100 inhabitants.

The Czech Republic and Spain have a slightly higher average than Italy, both around 0,6, while the EU average is 1,03.

But unfortunately, the news is not entirely good. Data shows that the number of female victims has grown in recent years, generally victims of femicide.

The share of murdered women in total murders rose from 11% in 1990 to 38,6% in 2018. In 2018, 345 homicides were recorded across Italy.

Detail: most victims knew their killer, usually their partner or close relative.

Despite the alarming number, Italy still has the best rate; 0,4 per 100 thousand inhabitants, compared to 0,86 for the average for the European continent.

In short, those who live in Italy live better.
