Museums and monuments in Italy break attendance record

The Italian Ministry of Culture announced on Wednesday (3) that the number of visitors to the museums and archaeological parks of the country in 2023 reached a new record, with almost 58 million tickets.

In total, 57.730.502 citizens were counted, an increase of 10,7 million compared to 2022 (almost 23%).

Compared to 2018, the pre-pandemic period, the increase was 2,4 million.

The ranking of the most visited museums and parks is led by the Colosseum in Rome, with over 12 million visitors, followed by the Pantheon (5,1 million), the Uffizi Galleries (5,1 million), the Archaeological Park of Pompeii (4 million), the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence (2 million), and Castel Sant'Angelo (1,3 million).

“All Italian citizens should be proud of their heritage. Visitors have increased, and I hope they increase even more. Income has grown and the more resources we have, the more we can allocate them to expand the offerings of our museums”, stated the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano.

According to the director general of the department for museums, Massimo Osanna, the “data demonstrate how healthy and growing our national museum panorama is”. “The experience of the 'Italian Museums' app, which today completes one year of its birth and whose system includes more than 400 state institutions, was also positive,” he added.
