Five exhibitions on board the Costa Diadema ship, on the route that will connect Genoa and Santos, two cities that are symbols of the largest migratory movement, will tell the story of the “Roots Cruise”, 150 years after the first trip on that route by Italian migrants, with photos, stories and documents.
One of the highlights is “Giuseppe Garibaldi and Anita Ribeiro da Silva: between Brazil and Italy”, curated by the Casa América Ets Foundation and the National Association of Veterans and Fallen, dedicated to the historical figures of Garibaldi and Anita.
“A balcony over Brazil” brings together photos and data on Italian immigration to Brazil over the last 150 years and is produced by the Hospedaria dos Imigrantes, the National Museum of Immigration in São Paulo and the National Museum of Emigration in Genoa (Mei).
In turn, the exhibition “Italian participation in the history of the Brazilian workers’ and trade union movement” recalls, through photos collected by the association “Amicizia Italia Brasile” and the Union of Italians in the world of Brazil, the birth of the first mutual organization for humanitarian aid and the world of work in a country that had begun the path of emancipation from slavery and witnessed the birth of the first large industries.
The list also includes “Nonni do Brasil”, curated by Oliviero Pluviano, a former ANSA journalist based in Brazil, and recently released by the Galata Museo del Mare. The exhibition tells the stories and biographies of Italians who emigrated to Brazil and who, with their work, sacrifices and passion, contributed to building the country we see today.
Finally, it will be possible to see the historical-documentary exhibition “On-board libraries”, which is dedicated to the initiative promoted in 1901 by the Naples Committee to make books on popular themes available to emigrants during their leisure and educational trips, shared by the Genoa committee that promoted the establishment of libraries on board ships bound mainly for South America.
