Senator Mario Borghese, vice-president of the Italiani all'Estero Associative Movement (MAIE), has once again criticized the Decree-Law on citizenship recently converted into law by the Italian Parliament. According to him, the measure was accompanied by a campaign designed to attack Italians living outside Italy.

“To justify the need and urgency of the decree-law, a campaign was mounted against alleged purchases of citizenship that still need to be proven and that probably never happened — certainly not on the scales that were disclosed,” he declared. Bourgeois.

The parliamentarian claims that this narrative was articulated to generate distrust about legitimate requests for recognition of Italian citizenship by descent, the so-called jure sanguinis.

He also pointed to the government's attempt to link this right to the use of passports by foreigners in Asia. "In addition, an association was deliberately made between the issuance of visas to foreigners living in Asia and the recognition of citizenship by right of blood - something for which there is no evidence of irregularity," he said.

Borghese stressed that MAIE was against the decree in Parliament and hopes that the damages will be repaired. “I hope that the effects caused by the decree-law that MAIE rejected in Parliament will be corrected soon.”

Another point of criticism from the senator is the new charge of 250 euros for issuing the citizenship certificate to minors. He highlights that this fee is not provided for in the legal text.

“It is a tax imposed without any basis in the decree, perhaps with the sole objective of making the process more difficult for families with fewer resources and discouraging them — as if citizenship by blood right was not a sacred right,” he concluded.
