Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Salvini on Tuesday (4) defended the idea of imposing a limit on the number of foreign players in Serie A.
The statement was made after the Azzurri coach, Roberto Mancini, criticized the lack of Italian athletes in the teams in the top division of the “country of boots”.
“I'm happy that important exponents of the world of football prove me right. It is necessary to have a limit on the number of foreign players on the field, to be able to give space to so many young Italians who end up being sacrificed”, said Salvini.
The minister is a Milan fan, and the team fielded four foreign players in their starting lineup in the last round against Roma, in addition to two Italian-Argentine players, Mateo Musacchio and Lucas Biglia.
The Giallorosso club had only one “native” among its starting 11, captain Daniele De Rossi.
Italian football has rules for hiring foreigners, but the rules do not apply to players born in the European Union.
