According to the mayor, by 2030 it will no longer be allowed to smoke outdoors in the city
The mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, announced this Saturday (18) that he wants to ban smoking in outdoor places by 2030, in an attempt to curb pollution in the Italian city.
“By 2030, smoking will no longer be allowed outdoors. But immediately or soon, you will not be able to smoke at bus stops and in the service queue”, said Sala, during an event in Isola.
The mayor explained that, according to some studies, smoking is one of the causes that contribute to higher levels of pollution in the city, such as fireworks and wood-burning ovens in pizzerias.
During a press conference, Sala highlighted that this is the city hall's “vision” and that any proposal will still have to go through the city council.
Regarding the ban on bus stops and service queues, the measure is included in the Air-Climate Regulation, which will soon be discussed by the Milan Council. The new rule is expected to be approved by March.
“Many obligations must be introduced so that everyone does their part”, concluded Sala.
